Onam is a harvest festival that crosses all religious and social borders. It takes place during the Malayalam month of Chingam, which is generally between August and September. This celebration lasts around ten days and is considered one of India’s most important festivals. The story of Onam teaches us many important lessons. First, it shows us the power of unity. Just like the people of Kerala who lived happily together under King Mahabali’s rule, we too should work together, support each other, and live in harmony. Second, the story reminds us of the importance of generosity.
Onam commemorates the return of the generous daitya king Mahabali after he was banished to the netherworld by Vamana .
